"Jerry was the contractor for our custom home located on the side of a mountain in rural Virginia. There were many unusual aspects to our proposed work:
1. Our construction location was 3 ½ hours away from where we lived, so we needed someone who would keep us informed and whom we could absolutely trust.
2. Construction Challenges: building area was cleared but steepness and septic location were problematic. There was not much space for staging of materials. The access to the house was a very long and steep gravel driveway.
3. We were looking for a contractor who could design/build based on a very specific set of owner drawn plans, which included priorities of aging in place, low energy use/decreased carbon footprint as well as a wood masonry fireplace with specific foundation needs.
4. We were looking for a contractor who would take us to a certain point in construction, then allow us to finish the house (Bill is also a contractor).
In many ways, Jerry’s work exceeded our high expectations. He offered clear design ideas that enhanced our vision of the house. He used the program Builder Trend that gave us day-to-day reports on work completed, with photos to document the work (total number of photos eventually exceeded 1000!). He was always available by phone, and always on the job site when subs were working. When problems were encountered (think: ROCK and MUD – 2018 was one of the rainiest on record), he worked through these, with a dose of good humor to carry us through. We totally trusted that the work he did was of the highest quality and was absolutely to code. He took a difficult site, challenging conditions, unique design parameters and created a beautiful, energy efficient house. Thank you Jerry!

Our business is currently renovating a circa-1900 dairy barn to become a new commercial winery; complex and demanding in many ways. The building, located on Vint Hill Farms Station, had been used by the Army and other federal agencies as a secure listening and signal intercept facility since the early 1940s. It had been converted over time to an office-like environment, but with layer upon layer of interior partitioning, extremely complex utilities, sound proofing and (now obsolete) security features. Rather than start with new construction, we had to ‘deconstruct’ the building before we could renovate and build new.
This complexity dictated that we use a time and materials contract with Craftsman Construction because neither they nor we could fully anticipate what the project would require. As you might expect, I was concerned for cost escalation and schedule slippage with this arrangement.
Our project is now about 65-70% complete. It is on schedule and within budget. As the owner, I could not be more pleased with the quality of work and good service that Craftsman Construction provides.
Rather than act like the typical general contractor, Jerry Jackness and the Craftsman Construction team have emerged to become valued and trusted partners. We innovate and plan together. Moreover, and perhaps more important, Craftsman treats my money like it was their own; always looking for ways to make the project better and to reduce costs where possible.
