When my roofer called me to tell me that he knew of a possible client for me in Delaplane VA, I had no idea that the job would be so scenic. This project was at the top of a steep and windy gravel road that led to the top of the mountain.
The client had an existing deck that wrapped completely around the sides and back of the house. The view from the deck was spectacular. The existing deck surface had completely failed and at this point, it was just an accident waiting to happen. The client’s wife wanted a new deck that she could entertain on and she also wanted it to be as maintenance free as possible. After looking over the deck we determined that the structural part of the deck was fine and didn’t need to be replaced. We suggested pulling up the existing deck surface and replacing the existing handrail.
The client wanted the best possible product for the re-surface. After doing some research on what products were available I decided to use Timber Tech decking and railing. We chose the Timber Tech Twin Finish decking and the Radiance Rail hand rail. One of the reasons we chose these products was there clean installation look. The handrail has no visible fasteners so it doesn’t look like the fake hand railing made out of vinyl. The decking uses hidden fastener’s so you don’t see any nails or screws through the top of the decking – this is a very clean look.
The project started by stripping off all the old decking, a job that was much harder than we originally thought. The original deck builders had decided to use spiral shank nails. These nails hold so well that when pulling up the boards the nails stayed behind, firmly embedded in the joist. The tear out took 2 to 3 times longer than we originally planned. After removing all the old decking, we installed the new Timber Tech Decking at a 45 degree angle with the hidden fasteners. We then finished up by installing the new Timber Tech Radiance Railing. We went ahead and rebuilt the staircase and decked it with the new materials.
The project turned out great and the client was very happy. We also replaced a couple of patio doors that the client decided to change. The roofer then installed a new standing seam metal roof. The client then asked us to go over the exterior of the house and replace any rotten trim, then we had our painter re-paint the entire exterior of the house.
All and all a great job for some great clients that where easy to work for and really appreciated the workmanship our men put into the project.
