Is there a single contact person within the company who will be your project manager? How is a price and time period decided? Gather some rudimentary information and references to see if the contractor has the level of qualification and reputation you want.

Determine the Work Style

Work with a builder who can bring your vision to life. Can you provide your own house plans or do you have to choose from a limited selection? What energy-saving features or modern technology can be incorporated into the design? Is there flexibility to make minor changes along the way? You might prefer to work with a contractor who is open to your suggestions and questions.

Tie up Loose Ends

If you will be in a neighborhood, you may have need information about covenants or homeowners’ association by-laws. Your builder should be able to work with the HOA as well as inspectors or agencies that oversee permits and ordinances.  Are you allowed at the construction site?  What about the walk-through, final inspection, warranty, and check list after moving in? A good builder provides customer service even after the home is completed.
